brief
In the meeting of earth and fiber, Braided Histories explores the deep interconnections between material, memory, and identity. Rooted in the legacies of handwoven textiles and hand-shaped ceramics, this exhibition reflects on the tactile narratives that shape our collective and individual pasts. Each work stands as both artifact and invitation—tracing the resilience of tradition while opening pathways for reinvention.
Through the rhythm of the loom and the fire of the kiln, the pieces in this collection transform raw materials into vessels of belonging and solidarity. Clay remembers the touch of the hand, textiles hold the imprint of the maker. In these liminal spaces between past and present, we find stories—woven, shaped, and layered—creating new dialogues between the familiar and the reimagined.
Braided Histories is not just a conversation with tradition but an active process of renewal. It is an exploration of allyship, a recognition of craft as knowledge, and an assertion that art has the power to bridge, reclaim and transform.
BIO of Artist
Aninda Varma
Aninda Varma is an artist steeped in diverse artistic experiences, underpinned by a robust design sensibility and distinguished academic credentials. Her current portfolio delves deep into the harmonious intersection of age-old traditions and modern artistry, drawing profound inspiration from India's rich tapestry of textiles and handloom heritage. Nature too, weaves its narrative into her creations. Varma holds a BFA (Maharaja Sayajirao University) Faculty of Fine Arts Baroda and an MA in Fine Art (Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts) Philadelphia, complemented by an advanced MA in Contemporary Art from Sotheby’s Institute of Art London.
Nature, in its vastness and detail, profoundly shapes Varma’s ceramic creations. Her vases aren't just objects; they are abstracted echoes of the seed pods the artist cherish and collect. Every curve, every contour is a homage to the beauty of the natural world. Varma finds a profound connection in working with clay, allowing its natural colors to shine forth without the veil of glaze, celebrating its raw, earthy essence.
